The Quest for Green: Irwin's Commitment to Environmental Leadership

Auditorium Seating Manufacturer's Environmental Program

April 24, 2009

Irwin Seating Company, founded in 1907 and headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is committed to developing and implementing cost-effective and progressive environmental programs to improve energy and manufacturing efficiency while reducing waste and pollution. We strive to be the seating supplier of choice for our customers by offering quality products, exceptional value and services, and significant and measurable environmental performance advantages on their projects. Irwin Seating Company understands the importance of our role as an environmentally responsible leader on both the local and global levels. We are putting our capabilities to work to create an increased demand for cleaner, more efficient public seating solutions.

Some of our successful environmental initiatives to date for which we may be able to earn LEED points based upon the criteria include:

• On-site waste stream reduction. Irwin Seating Company recycles cartons shipped to each job site whenever possible. In some cases, we are able to ship certain product components strap-wrapped, which eliminates the use of cartons altogether. See the attached “Material Packaging and Cardboard Handling Policy” for more details.
Contributes toward 1 point.
• Reusable resources. Irwin Seating Company is leading the way in the restoration of existing chairs. We have extensive capabilities to renovate and restore “old” chairs to their original beauty. Restoration is an excellent option for many aging facilities. This environmentally friendly option also has the distinct advantage of, in most cases, allowing architects to work with the building codes in existence at the time the venue was built. Contributes toward 2 points.

• Recycled content. Irwin Seating Company offers cast iron, steel and plastic components and packaging materials with both post consumer and post industrial content. Fabric with up to 100% recycled content is available when selected from our Designtex “Friendly Environments” Fabric Card. Contributes toward 2 points.

• Regional manufacturing. Irwin Seating Company utilizes as many local suppliers as possible, thereby decreasing pollution from transporting products a long distance. We also work in tandem with our suppliers to develop sound environmental policies to reduce waste and increase efficiency. Contributes toward 2 points. (This is only relevant to LEED points when the Irwin Seating Company customer is within 500 miles of Grand Rapids, Michigan.)

• Certified wood products. Irwin Seating Company is not a FSC certified supplier. However, we have the ability to use FSC wood when it is specified. FSC wood is available for the manufacture of both hardwood and plywood inner and outer panels, and hardwood lumber is also available to us. Contributes toward 2 points (when customer specifies certified wood products).

• Use of low emitting materials. When specified, Irwin Seating Company can provide composite wood products manufactured without the use of added urea-formaldehyde resins.
Contributes toward 1 points.

At this time, Irwin Seating Company is working toward the use of:

• Rapidly renewable material and
• Environmentally innovation in all our products and manufacturing processes.

Irwin Seating Company understands that helping our customers meet their environmental challenges is important in today’s marketplace. Environmental leadership is a key element of the Irwin Difference, and we are committed to manufacturing products that will leave little, if any, impact on the world in years to come.
