Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why purchase off state contract?
A: State contracts allow the school district to benefit from the purchasing power of the state In other words, furniture manufacturers extend discounts to the state based on purchasing volume -- and individual purchasing school districts see that benefit.
Also, when your school principal or business administrator purchases off state contractor, he or she receives exactly what was ordered. Too often, school furniture is subject to the bid process where “low bid” rules. This results in dissatisfaction because the furniture delivered is not the exact furniture specified in the bid. Another complication involves receiving furniture the general contract has decided to provide, and not what the architect has specified. Simply put, purchasing off state contract gives the choice back to the school purchasing official and ensures that the end product meets the standards that he or she initially specified.
Q: Do our fume hoods contain asbestos?
A: If your school was constructed during the 1930s to 1960s, your school laboratories’ fume hoods may contain asbestos materials. For the past 20 years, there has been steady progress made with respect to asbestos removal but fume hoods are often forgotten in this diligent effort.
Fume hoods were lined with asbestos-containing materials up until the 1970s because of heat/fire resistant qualities. Now, most fume hoods are manufactured with a polyresin or a phenolic resin interior liner. In some cases, hoods are constructed out of stainless steel, but the cost usually won’t justify the material’s usage in middle & high school science labs.
